The new announced the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet supports the fourth-generation mobile internet and will be considerably faster than the original BlackBerry Playbook. Just like its previous, the new BlackBerry Tablet also comes with a stunning 7-inch, 600×1024 LCD display which is pretty good for watching movies. HD videos on the tablet are really vivid and colourful, with fantastic clarity. If you have some DVD’s or DVD ISO image files, why not copy these movies to your BlackBerry PlayBook 4G and have a better movie watching experience on the go?

As we all know, in order to get movies off DVD (ISO) and onto PlayBook 4G for playing back, we’ll need to get some help from third-party software to convert DVD’s to PlayBook compatible video formats (e.g. h.264 mp4). There are many programs out there that allow you to make copies of your DVDs and let you watch them the way you want to view them. Most of you are likely familiar with the excellent Handbrake for ripping standard Def DVDs, however, it cannot decrypt the commercial DVD discs (ie: Disney and other animated movies ) the way it can with regular DVDs. So you’ll need to add an intermediate step.
If you’re looking for ease of use, and don’t mind spending $40 (they currently have a sale), I’ve had success using Pavtube’s DVD Ripper (available for Windows or for Mac users. Get the Windows version here, and the Mac version here) to convert and rip DVD’s yet ISO image files to a format playable by the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0. I’ve found the quality to be excellent, and see no difference when compared to playing the discs themselves. The audio/video synchronization is very good, the size of the subtitles too. The time it takes to convert in this software is almost half that in other. Just free download it and take the movies from your DVD discs and put them on the PlayBook 4G.

The software works like most other DVD rippers I’ve used. Pop in your disc, choose an PlayBook output profile (it has a preset option to choose a format specific to the new PlayBook, you can easily find it under “BlackBerry > BlackBerry Playbook HD 720p(*.mp4)” ), and start the conversion. Then go get a cup of coffee (conversion takes time). For detailed guide, you can follow the totorial here.
The supported resolution of PlayBook 4G goes up to 1080p, though video playback and most apps never break out of 720p. For watching videos on the BlackBerry Tablet, 720p with 1500~2000kbps is just all right. I find that bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss. Below is the best format settings for converting DVD videos to PlayBook 4G per my experience (Click “Settings” button to set the video/audio parameters):

Video
Codec- H.264
Resolution- 1280×720 (HD)
Bitrate- 1500/2000kbps
Framerate- 24fps
Audio
Codec- AAC
Sampling rate- 44.1khz
Bitrate- 128kbps
Channel- stereo
When the conversion finishes, you can click “Open” to locate the new .mp4 files. And then you can simply use the Blackberry Desktop Software to transfer the converted DVD’s or DVD ISO movies to your BlackBerry Playbook 4G and enjoy them on the go.
